What is dermatology?
Dermatology is the
field of medicine that specializes
in treatment for the skin and other
exterior tissues of the body. Dermatologists
are extremely competent in diagnosing
and treating skin diseases, advising
patients on how to protect the skin
from the sun or other harmful effects,
and performing both medically-necessary
and cosmetic surgeries.
What types of procedures
do dermatologists perform?
Procedures
regularly performed by dermatologists
include:
- Filler injections (collagen,
fat) – Collagen or fat is
injected under the skin to fill
out lines or depressions. Results
can be seen almost immediately,
and last for a few months or more.
- Botox injections – These
injections temporarily paralyze
the muscles under the skin, which
wipes out most wrinkles in the area
for as long as a year.
- Chemical peels – Chemical
solutions are applied to the face;
when removed, they peel away surface
skin. Formulas vary in strength,
though all remove blemishes and
smooth wrinkles to some degree or
another.
- Laser skin resurfacing –
A focused laser is used to remove
the outer layers of skin.
- Dermabrasion – There are
several forms of dermabrasion, all
of which are performed fairly frequently.
Some are quicker, removing only
superficial imperfections, while
others take longer but can address
deeper marks or depressions.
- Laser hair removal – This
procedure sends low-energy laser
light through the patient’s
skin, where it is absorbed by the
hair follicles. Hairs are quickly
and gently disabled, after which
they fall out.
- Liposuction – Small incisions
are made, through which deposits
of fat are suctioned out. Techniques
include the use of a saline/anesthetic
solution to saturate the fat before
suctioning as well as the use of
ultrasound to break the deposit
up beforehand.
- Hair transplantation –
Various methods of transplanting
hair are currently in use to fill
areas as large as the entire crown.
- Rosacea – This skin condition
creates acne-like bumps and raised
blood vessels in spots on the head
and torso. It can be treated with
medications and antibiotics, and
sometimes laser surgery.
- Excision of cancerous skin growths
